September is winding down and so is this month’s theme about having the right mindset for weight loss.
Before we head into October, however, I still have some important tips.
I know firsthand how challenging it is to get your mindset around losing weight and enjoying the process. I mean, who tells themselves “I can’t wait for Monday to be here so I can start my diet,” right?
WHY MINDSET MATTERS
A negative mentality around our weight and diet is so ingrained that we have a hard time breaking these beliefs systems.
Think about it, you probably calculate your daily calories then overthink which foods you may have for your three meals while wondering if you’ll have enough calories “left” to have some for snacks.
Constant monitoring your food intake like this creates a lot of stress. Even more exasperating is when you don’t eat the foods you intended eat because that cheeseburger, pizza, or cake looked more fulfilling and relieved the discomfort you were experiencing at that moment.
In the end you feel you let yourself down again.
DON’T LET FEAR HOLD YOU BACK
Anyone who has been on the “weight loss hamster wheel,” knows that the thought of starting another diet creates a sense of FEAR instead of relief.
So I want to talk more about this feeling and what we can do to overcome our fears.
For those of you who have been on a variety of diets and failed, I imagine you felt anger and disappointment. The thought of starting another weight loss effort is therefore that last thing you want to do.
You tell yourself that there is so much evidence that you cannot succeed. You have tried and tried and gotten nowhere. You are worried about setting yourself up to fail yet again.
And so you suffer, but it’s not likely you will let these feelings go. It constantly nags at you. In fact, it’s a burden you have been carrying around for years.
When I was going through my weight loss journey, I tried everything. I tried the weight loss “systems” like Jenny Craig, Nutri-System, and Weight Watchers. I hired a personal trainer and a nutritionist.
I spent hundreds of dollars wanting them to solve this weight loss problem.
I realized through my health coach Grace, though, it wasn’t the money that was going to solve the problem; instead it was working with her and getting to the root cause of what was preventing me from succeeding.
I know you’re probably thinking, “Lisa, I don’t want to spend any more money or time on this.”
I don’t believe that’s true, however, or you wouldn’t be here trying to find an answer. I can see, however, that you’re frustrated because of all the things you’ve already tried and had little success.
I believe all the things that didn’t work always lead to things that do.
Fear can talk you into things and it can talk you out of things, and sometimes we are not sure if we made the right decision.
I wonder if part of the weight loss struggle is not only fear of failure, but also the discomfort of weight loss?
And who can blame you?
Experience has shown you that weight loss is restrictive. Weight loss is deprivation. You can’t eat the things you love while others around you can and you didn’t to sign up for that, right? You suffer through it and continue to feel that weight loss is a chore.
I know and understand that fear and discomfort can keep you away from your weight loss goal, but I am here to say don’t let it.
